Description
The Peak District is deservedly renowned for its pubs and hostelries. Whilst nearly all have always served a good pint of real ale, most now also offer reasonably-priced food at lunchtime and in the evening. Some of those in smaller villages have restricted opening times (eg. 12pm-2pm at lunchtime and 5pm-11pm in the evening) so worth checking in advance before heading off.
The nearest pubs to Haddon Grove Farm all serve good food and we can recommend them all.
Over Haddon
(1.5 miles) –
The Lathkill Hotel
– serves pub food and has a small restaurant. Straightforward fare, reasonably priced. Worth booking for evening meals, particularly in the restaurant. Great views across towards Lathkill Dale. Ideal start or end point for a walk through this secluded nature reserve.
Monyash
(2 miles) –
The Bulls Head
– good range of freshly-cooked pub food - you may have to wait a little while at busy times. At the other end of the Lathkill Dale walk from Over Haddon. Excellent children's play area behind the pub.
Hurdlow
(3 miles) -
The Royal Oak
- excellent food and drink, extensive menu, highly recommended by previous guests. Suggest booking at weekends, particularly for groups. Situated just above the Tissington Trail, so you could cycle there.
Sheldon
(2.5 miles) –
The Cock and Pullet
– very popular with locals, particularly Sunday lunch. Limited menu, but hot and fresh. Especially recommend the roast dinners with all the trimmings! Opens a 12pm for lunch. Worth booking if more than a couple of people as it gets very busy. There is a nice walk from Haddon Grove Farm up Green Lane and past the Magpie Mine (old lead mining works) to Sheldon. Mostly uphill on the way, but downhill on the way back!
Ashford-in-the-Water
(2.5 miles) – picturesque village nestling off the A6.
The Bull’s Head
serves food which is a cut above the usual. We can particularly recommend the steak sandwich, also the homemade soups and puddings. Also
The Ashford Arms
– a large pub with plenty of room. Good range of standard pub fare.
Monsal Head
(3 miles) – right at the top of Monsal Dale with breathtaking views across the valley with the disused railway viaduct in the foreground.
The Monsal
– cosy pub overlooking the Dale. Several eating options although generally the same menu. In the main pub, in the converted stableblock (cosy but busy) or outside in the courtyard. Good food and wide selection of beers.
Bakewell
(3 miles) – lots of choice of pub, but we can recommend
The Castle Inn
which offers a good selection of food.
Froggatt
(6 miles) –
The Chequers Inn
– a very popular pub/restaurant offering high quality meals and a wide selection of real ales. Worth booking, particularly in the evening.
